Name and Historical Data
The village of Lagou owes its name to the first settler whose name was Thomas Lagos. Around the village, various archaic objects, pots and vaulted tombs have been found, testifying that the area had been inhabited since 650-550 BC.
Lagοu was mentioned by the historian Castrofilaca (K105) as Mettochio di Lagu, but he did not mention the number of inhabitants. By the historian Basilicata it was listed as Metochio Lagu with 10 houses in 1630 (Monuments of Cret. Hist. V, p.29). In the Turkish census of 1671 it was mentioned as Lagu with 29 inhabitants (N. Stavrinidis, Translations, B’, p. 136).
