The Holy Church of the Holy Spirit is located at the northwestern edge of the Limnakaro Plateau, at an altitude of approximately 1,120 meters, south of the Lassithi Plateau in Crete. It is a two-aisled church with particular historical and architectural significance.
Architecture and History
- The first aisle, dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Savior, dates back to the period of Venetian rule. It features frescoes that likely date back to the 14th century—an especially noteworthy fact, as during that period the Lassithi Plateau was uninhabited due to Venetian decrees.
- The second aisle was added in 1875 and is dedicated to the Holy Spirit. Unlike the first aisle, it does not contain any frescoes.
- The church’s exterior resembles a three-aisled basilica, with the central aisle elevated—reminiscent of the Church of Saint Mark in Heraklion.
Religious Events
- Feast of the Holy Spirit: During the annual feast, a large number of pilgrims gather at the church, participating in festive celebrations.
- Good Friday: On the morning of Good Friday, the Service of the Royal Hours is held, followed by the decoration of the Epitaph with flowers gathered from the surrounding area and its procession through the idyllic landscape of the plateau.
