Windmills of Seli Ampelou

Share it!

The windmills at Seli Ampelou are one of the most distinctive and well-preserved windmill complexes in Crete. They are located at the northern entrance of the Lassithi Plateau, near the village of Tzermiado, and are a trademark of the region.
Characteristics and History
Originally, there were 26 windmills, but today 24 of them have survived. These mills were built in the “monopantos” or “axetrochari” style, featuring a rectangular base and a semicircular wall, and are oriented northwest. Their construction dates back to the Venetian period, though the windmills at Seli Ampelou were moved there from Zaroma, near Potamoi, at the end of the 19th century. They were used by local residents for grinding grain.
The windmill complex was declared a work of art in 1986, and it represents the largest concentration of windmills in both Crete and Greece. Today, most of the windmills are privately owned and well-preserved, offering visitors a truly unique sight.
Location and Access
The windmills are located approximately 52 kilometers east of Agios Nikolaos and 3 kilometers west of the village of Tzermiado. The area is easily accessible and is a popular destination for visitors to the Lassithi Plateau.
