In the Lasithi Plateau, the presence of lakes is mainly the result of heavy rainfall and flood events, as well as artificial constructions for irrigation purposes.
Natural Lakes from Floods
The Lasithi Plateau, due to its closed geological nature, often floods after heavy rainfall. For example, in January 2025, the Plateau turned into an extensive lake following continuous rainfall, with the water reaching 40,000 cubic meters per hour in the pipeline of the Aposelemis Dam.
Artificial Lakes and Reservoirs
For the irrigation of crops, artificial reservoirs have been constructed, such as the Agios Georgios Reservoir. Its construction, with a budget of 11.5 million euros, aims to irrigate 13,370 acres in the western part of the plateau.
