Tzermiadó towards Karfí

Share it!

Karfí is a prehistoric site in Crete. High up in the Lasithi Mountains in eastern Crete, it was well protected from the attacks of the Sea Peoples. ‘Karfí’ is a local toponym for the limestone outcrop that marks the summit of the area, especially when observed from the north.

It is located about 1,100 meters above sea level and has a view of the northern entrance to the Lasithi Plateau. While there are indications that the site was used during the Middle Minoan period as a mountaintop sanctuary, Kafí is more known as a large and extensive excavated city of the Late Minoan period IIIc (around 1200-1000 BC), at the beginning of the Greek ‘Dark Ages‘.
